Announcements and Reminders
Bonny and Connie as well as 4 others members of Rotoract  from UCSC attended our meeting today (see photos). They want to have members of our club mentor a college student. If interested please let them know.  They are also asking Rotarians to give them a job and we pay them $10 an hour and the money goes to Rotoract.  They will have their first fundraiser on April 29th, a silent auction with entertainment … they need donated items to auction off. If you have anything let them know!
Feb 23rd and Mar 16th will be our club and area speech contests.
Our major fundraiser is May 5th. Please let Michelle know if you have silent auction items or access to a vacation home or other exciting things. The committee meets 1st and 3rd Thursdays at 11:15.
On Feb 25th is the Stop Hunger distribution at New Brighton Middle School (across the street from St. Joseph’s)  at 8:30 in the morning.

Craig introduced our speaker today, Armando Alcaraz, of his own consulting firm. He brings 10 years of experience to his chosen field of transformational leadership and communication. He is also a musician and songwriter!  Today he spoke to us about the ‘magical opportunity of conflict.’
He began by using an example out of his day care experience.  He spoke about how we try to avoid conflict, but confronting conflict in a constructive way can bring an opportunity to build a relationship and create something new. Conflict is everywhere… part of life. He gave us a few concepts to guide our thinking:
Stop trying to control what the other person is doing and try to connect with them instead.
You have to know what you want or your needs and underlying values. Empathy and imagination are both important in this effort.
There is a transformation that happens when you are able to connect to your own needs and make this desired connection but when you are stuck in judgements about the other person it is hard to come to the above place.
Mr Alcaraz then opened up the room to a discussion of conflict and explored with us our thoughts about conflict and how we could apply his ideas.
