Announcements and Reminders

Rotarian of the week was Al because it is his birthday!
Michelle reminded us of our major fundraiser on Friday May 5th to benefit Leo’s Haven. We have 78 people signed up to attend. We have 7 live auctions items but could use one more. We have between 15 and 20 silent auction items but keep those coming in. Major donors can still be welcomed for one more week.
District conference annual meeting is May 6th. Saturday night is a dinner at $50 per person. See Doug Deaver to sign up.
May 7th is Stop Hunger Now at the Boardwalk. Volunteer with Doug from 10:00 am to noon.
The Music Festival will be Saturday May 27th  and Sunday May 28th . We need volunteers for the 28th especially. You must be there from 9:00 to 5:00.
Saturday April 29th at Harbor High will be a presentation of the inventions that  the students created. Our club donated $158 to this effort so it might be nice to see what our students accomplished.
Their first silent auction and dinner will be held by Rotaract  on April 29th at 5:00 at Peace United Church on High Street. It will benefit Jacob’s Heart and Feed the Children.

Representatives of the Soquel Creek Water District spoke to us today. They spoke about replenishing mid county groundwater and the community water plan.
Our district is facing the problem of seawater intrusion on the coast. We are pumping 1/3 more water out of the aquafer more than we should. The state considers us to be a critically overdrafted basin. The speakers stressed that we need long term protective water levels to prevent that intrusion from moving further inland.
In addition, our water also has TCP, chromium 6 and arsenic in the water (naturally occurring). We need to remediate for that but it does take treatment.
Robust conservation is needed, but we are doing well. Our daily water usage is half of what it used to be. We also have proactive groundwater management which consists of moving a lot of wells inland.
Some other potential solutions are water purification, river water transfers, desalinization and storm water capture. PureWater Soquel is an initiative that they are currently focusing on. The district is planning to improve water quality, reliability and timeliness through this groundwater replenishment project which is essentially a water purification project, treating wastewater. They are currently working on the EIR and possible locations for the water treatment facility. The timeline for completion is 2022.
