Nourishing Generations has been a non-profit for 10 years.  It is funded by federal funds (SNAP) and encompasses nutrition education, healthy cooking and hands on fun exercises. She said 30% of the kids in Santa Cruz county are considered obese or pre-diabetic, perhaps due to increased sugar in the diet and lowered activity.

The main programs for kids are at Live Oak and Del Mar elementary schools.  These are run by professional chefs and fitness instructors. Topics include know your food groups, eat a rainbow and sweet smart among others. Each program is 2 hours long and serves 55 kids at a time. This year they have 165 kids that they serve.

Each school gets 12 weeks of service. They also work with foster kids who are aging out of the system and pregnant and post-partum teems at Siena House.

The star of the show is the hands-on cooking program where the children learn cooking skills and kitchen safety. They go home with healthy recipes. Nutrition activities include fun games such as rainbow bingo to learn colorful fruits and vegetables. They also teach children to read labels.  Healthy moving includes circuit training, soccer and hula hoop games as well as yoga. At the end they share a meal.

They also do parent classes and train teachers. They have classes at affordable housing communities.  Community partners include Second Harvest, Caroline’s and SC County Health Services among many others.

They are always interested in community partners and volunteers!
